AVATAR - Aerobic Vehicle for Hypersonic Aerospace TrAnspoRtation - is an RLV - Reusable Launch Vehicle - India’s indigenous Space Shuttle Program. Being jointly developed by ISRO and DRDO, the uniqueness of this space shuttle design lies in that it will collect air from the atmosphere during take off, will then separate oxygen in liquid format from the collected air, and use this liquid oxygen as fuel in its later stages of flight. A Technology demonstration of this project is planned later this year. American’s are retiring their space shuttles, Russians abandoned their space shuttle program 20 years back, time will tell how Indians will score in this field. If successful, the Indian space shuttle is going to drastically reduce the cost of launching satellites, as well as pave the way for Indian manned space expeditions.
